New arrival

I was making flying progress on the Leaf Lace shawl, actually hoping to have it done to wear to an event I have later next week. Of course, something had to happen to screw that up. My right wrist and thumb hurt like the devil. I’m not sure if it’s because of the knitting or typing and mouse-clicking. I ignored it for a few days but now it’s really getting in the way so I had to put the damn thing away.

So instead, I thought I’d fiddle around with a new project. The husband had asked for a stockinette alpaca turtleneck some time back (what is it with men and stockinette?) but I managed to get him to agree to some kind of ribbed pattern. He wanted a dull dull brown, but instead he’s getting this rich, dark red in Elann’s Peruvian pure alpaca:

It’s in the shade "Oxblood". I haven’t used this yarn before but boy does it feel soft. As usual, they say worsted and five stitches to the inch on size 6s, but I can see myself using 4s. It feels quite fine.

The pullover I was thinking of was this one:

This one is for a child and is a V-neck, but I’m going to adapt it to a turtleneck. I like the saddle-shoulder and the way it shows off the ribbing, and as I imagine it I think it will suit the turtleneck as well. The stitch pattern is called "Cartridge Rib" and it’s from Ann Budd’s Handy book of Sweater Patterns. I’ll probably do the cartridge rib all over and not do the 1×1 at the wrists as shown. It’s a simple 2-row repeat, with knit and slip stitch.

I’m determined not to start this one, even swatch it, until I’m done with one of the shawls or my BPT cardigan, but looks like this week there won’t be much progress on anything. I’m hoping to have this pullover done by December, though.

What better time to catch up on my reading?

I love the turtleneck concept, sounds like it will look great. Although the name of that yarn color kinda scares me…”Oxblood”??? I guess it does fit, though, ha ha.

Pretty color! (Or perhaps I should say handsome color since it’s destined for a man’s sweater:) Either way, it’s very rich and will make a wonderfully warm and nice sweater!

    Beautiful color, that “Oxblood”…
I saw a men’s pullover in the Knitpicks catalog that was similar. It is not a turtleneck, but i believe it has the saddle shoulders.

I really like that pattern – and the color of the yarn is manly enough and also not a dull color! Perfect!

Dude, he wants alpaca? Where he is? I know he’s a lover of cool fibers, but isn’t that going to be, like, hot?

That said, gorgeous color, and I like the pattern a lot, and the end result is going to be just beautiful.

Also, once I finish off the things I’ve currently got on needles, I’m totally going to copy you and start the FFL shawl, because I’m kind of missing having lace knitting to do.

Hi there– Did you know that there’s a Yahoo knitalong for FFL, and someone has posted a pattern for a triangular version of the shawl?

  • desiknitter says:

Ah, I’m glad nobody thought the oxblood was too girlie a shade. He thinks it’s too bright; too bad.

Tonni, thanks for visiting the blog! Which pattern did you mean in the Catalog? I saw that a couple of Ann Budd’s patterns were there, so probably one of those, right?

Spud, right now where he is it’s 35 deg c., but in winter it goes down to close to 0 deg c and there isn’t any heating. So I think the light-but-warm alpaca will actually be quite useful.

Spud and Quill, we will probably start the FF&L sometime soon, no? I joined the yahoo group, but then got sidetracked into the Leaf Lace shawl. But I have a pink salwar kameez that the pink yarn will go wonderfully with, so I also want to start teh FF&L soon. Where’s the time?????

  • spudsayshi says:

I hadn’t factored in the no heating thing. That was an issue in Australia, too, actually. Very cold trips to the loo and shower in the morning.

For some reason I’ve decided I have to finish everything I currently have on needles (with the possible exception of the sock) before I start something new. I’m not usually like that. But come… oh, hell, who knows, the FF&L is a go.
