Moving along
I have made several resolutions for 2007. Amidst the usual ‘eat less, exercise more, snap at people less, breathe more deeply’ type virtuous ones in my list, is the one most virtuous for knitters: finish all UFOs before beginning new ones. Considering that at least ten people have pissed me off already the first week of the year and I have snarled at seven (and the less said about the amount I consumed as I got bored to tears at a conference the last three days the better), I figured, wth, I might as well break another resolution.
So the new year begins with the excitement of choosing a new project. I don’t know what yet, maybe a pair of socks to keep it small, and wipe out the memory of those months spent doing twisted knitted stitch trying to finish the alpaca pullover, when I actually progressed only four miserable inches. As I unpack my suitcase, those Oxblood skeins are staring balefully at me, an almost violent reminder of my failure to meet my deadline. Another resolution, no doubt to be binned soon: not to take on more than I can deal with.
Of course, one can always feel better by looking at what was actually completed. There’s a certain neatness in the fact that I began and ended with gloves.
Brooks Farm gloves
Turkish Balaclava hat
Cashmere vest
Clapotis
Koigu Eyelet Rib socks
Cloverleaf Koigu socks
Opal Brasil socks
Leaf Lace shawl
Odessa hat
Swallowtail Merino lace shawl
Merino fingerless gloves
The funniest thing about this list is the number of items that accompanied me across the world this time on the trip to Shimla. Various other members of my family brought older items I’d made for them, and if I’d been better organized (resolution…), I’d have remembered to take pictures for a nice "Desiknitter’s knits go to Shimla" post. Instead, you have to imagine a freezing family swathed in handknits of variable quality, grateful for the warmth, if not the style. I saw an old vest my brother in law wore and averted my eyes when he reminded me I had made it for him. Talk about gauge improving with time!

I’m kind of curious about who pissed you off AND what you ate….
Hello! I came across your blog when while searching for places to purchase yarn & needles in India. My parents are visiting Mumbai and Delhi this month. Any suggestions?
that is a great list of FO’s!!!!!
A new year can only begin by
1. Setting Fire to all Unfinished Projects in the BackYard.
2. Knitting a new Odessa Hat
3. Bringing it, and a newly printed, newly blurbed copy of a certain book, to Boston for the AAS where you will be feted, wined and championed as a Champions of Desis and Knitters everywhere.
OK, so, I totally forgot that you made a pair of socks using eyelet rib! I honestly didn’t mean to copy you, though I suppose I could also say that it was a tribute.
Sorry for the pissed-off-ness of your early 2007. I’m currently focusing most of my pissed-off-ness on one person, perhaps unfairly. But there you go. I hope it passes.
Oh, and sorry AHA was boring. You’d think thousands of historians could come up with something interesting, wouldn’t you?
welcome back!
Spud, I think your eyelet rib is different from my eyelet rib! Your sock looks different. And yes, AHA was blah. The two panels I did want to go to coincided with mine, but I was also mostly jetlagged and asleep even when walking around the conference. Sangeeta: one person who really pissed me off was a textbook, stereotypical nightmare co-passenger, who not only occupied half my seat on the plane due to his girth, but also insisted on talking NONSTOP and LOUDLY about everything from his ipod to his food habits, and when I buried my head in a book, made fun of me with the woman sitting next to him!! I changed my seat after a while. Then there was the guy in Delhi, and the airline official in Paris….
Hi Priya, thanks for visiting! Do look at Swapna’s blog mrsfife.wordpress.com which has a list of yarn resources in various Indian cities. The place I’d recommend in Delhi is Punjab Woollen House in Munirka market, right on Outer Ring Road.
Sepoy, awwwwww. Now even my travel-weary self is tempted. btw, all the knitters are going to be aghast at your suggestion of the bonfire, but I am sure all of us have thought of it at least once!
Glad to see you back! I just faced up to my UFOs and have decided that, as much as I want to knit myself a new scarf and hat, I need to finish at least a couple of my current projects before starting anything new. Ah, we’ll see how long that resolution lasts, especially since I already got the new yarn for my scarf and hat. Plus I just got some yarn to make a clapotis. Ah, the resolve crumbles already….
Awesome list of completed projects. If you have a UFO that’s making you unhappy or bored, I say get rid of it before it drags your new year down (although I hesitate to recommend burning perfectly good wool, hah!).
Great FOs and I love the socks Quill made.
My resolution concerning UFOs was to finish all current UFOs sometime before year’s end, but that doesn’t preclude me from starting something new:) Which is good, because I did start something new.
