Poll: Crimson or Green?
Thank you, thank you, thank you all for the enthusiastic response to my Spiral Scarf! It’s wonderful to get positive feedback, especially when you’ve tried something new. In keeping with my promise that it would not be the last project in the Knitting Nature book, I have been itching to get started on the Ogee tunic. But this is proving to be complicated in terms of yarn choice and gauge. I have two contenders: a heavily variegated, handpainted forest greenish yarn, and a bright crimson tightly spun British 5 ply guernsey. Both in stash, both enough to finish the sweater. Here are pics of the original, the green and the crimson:
Pros and cons of both:
The variegated: Pros: most of the tunic is stockinette and
this will show off the colours. Nice and soft. Cons: am concerned that the centre cable
will be obscured a bit by the change in colours. Plus, gauge is slightly off, needs some arithmetic.
The crimson: the tight ply will definitely show off
the cables very well. Gauge is correct. Cons: am concerned that people will have to use
shades when looking at it, or me wearing it. Plus, it softens when washed, but not that soft to knit with.
I’ve decided that it has to be either of the two, because I’m not buying any new yarn just yet. So which one? Please vote below and help me decide! The colours of both are accurate on my monitor.

I am really fond of the variegated yarn, it reminds me of the ocean.
I vote for the crimson! Easier to pair with jeans and black, which I wear a lot. But of course, the cardigan is not for me. If the person wearing it is more likely to wear it with khaki or neutrals, or has very light hair, then go for the forest green.
Without the swatch, I would have thought a solid color would work best, but I think the cables look lovely in the variegated.
While I love that variegated yarn, it just seems to hard to see the cables. Personally, I love red and don’t think that crimson yarn will be too bright at all. In any case, it’s a beautiful tunic – nice choice for your next knit!
Crimson!
I love the red. It will show off the cables nicely, and it is a very happy color. The variegated yarn is a little dark, and it seems to hide the complexity of the pattern.
That crimson red is gorgeous! Definitely use a solid colour.
I voted for the darker one – the red is lovely, but the colour is too solid, I like colours with a little more going on…..
I did vote already, but I wanted to tell you why I chose the one I did. If it didn’t have any cabling, I’d probably go with the green because it is subtle shading, but I think it obscures the cable on the swatch. The red is vibrant and I think it would show off the details really well. Hope you like whichever one you choose.
another crimson vote here! I love reds!
It seems that the cables are visible in the variegated yarn, which is unusual. It’s hard to say what the overall effect would be, though…The red seems a bit easier because the gauge is correct and you know that the pattern will be visible. I guess it depends on whether you’d truly wear the bright red or not!
Both yarns are nice, but go with the red for this sweater!
I like the vareigated. You’ve swatched the part where the cables are closest together and hardest to see, I think, but my guess is the cables as a whole will stand out nicely. Isn’t that the yarn you were going to use for BPT?
Definitely the crimson. I think the cables get a little bit lost in the variegated green. Maybe use the forest green to make a stockinette classic like the Hourglass, from Last Minute Knitted Gifts?
Also, since when did we desis shy away from bright colors? Isn’t that one of the bonuses of having a perma-tan.
I adore crimson. It’s so vibrant and full of life. Judging by the poll results it’s the popular choice as well.
I really like the blue color, it doesn’t look very contrastey in the photo, and you can definitely see the cables in the swatch. But you’re probably better off with the red (even if it is RED) for that sweater pattern. If you really don’t like the red color, you could always overdye it!
