Oh, what a lovely post to wake up to! I'm in Hawai'i for a conference, wrestling daily about how to 'do' (and not do?) tourism -- nothing could be more welcome than your smart, thoughtful, witty travelogues. Take care, and stay cool in Delhi!

Small world. I was just reading about Bengali Hilsa fish and mustard sauce last night, back here in wilds of "firangistan." Surprised to see it out on my daily knitting foray today in full detail -- and I am thinking that this is pretty cool. Thanks for the connections. You rock!

Whether with or without Bengal, I want to take your history classes if this is how you teach history. Lovely narrative, makes me want to visit these places you document. I felt the same way, by the way, also of the Pune streets when you pointed out the small historic details of the wadas, etc-- and this from a person who hails from that same place. :))

Waiting for the Delhi narratives and photos--I am not sure which one (fotu or ishtory) I would rate higher.

Not for the faint of heart because... fishy? or spicy? I think I remember reading that fish was a big part of Bengali cuisine in A Suitable Boy. Could that be right? Wasn't one of the possible suitable boys, the poet, from Calcutta?

Also, great people pictures. I'm always a bit too shy to take those.

Looks like a good time, but I'd pass on the fish. I was listening to a story on Bangladeshi diaspora rappers on NPR this afternoon and for some reason my mind drifted to fish curries.

What I'd really love to be able to find around these parts is some South Indian food. There was a good South Indian restaurant near the Hindu temple when I lived in Pittsburgh (the ex and I were not uncommonly the only goras in the place), but they're so hard to come by in most of the States.
