Dilemma

§ July 29th, 2009 § Filed under sweaters § 13 Comments

I need to unpack; restock my kitchen and fridge; have my broken mobile phone repaired; get over jetlag, and brave a mountain of work in my office.

But the burning question that I have to resolve before any of that can be done is:

The yarn: Brooks Farm Mas Acero (Worsted, wool-silk-rayon, approx 1650 yards)

masacero

The patterns:
Pamela Wynne’s excellent and wildly popular February Lady Sweater (yes, I am aware I am very late to this party)
or
The Sidelines Top from Interweave Knits last fall.

Questions:

Am leaning towards the Top, but the Lady sweater keeps drawing me back, and I am going back and forth.

1) Which one to make with this yarn?
2) Will the Lady sweater require a lot of mods to fit my dimensions, and will it look ok on my frame?
3) Is the Sidelines top worth the change in gauge and the maths required (it’s for DK yarn)?
4) Which one will show off the slightly variegated yarn better, and hold the silk-wool-rayon blend better?
5) I already have a lot of stuff in this colourway, and is reminding me of my Ogee Tunic. Should I be selling or trading in this yarn for something else on Ravelry?

Hi babe, you need to set that pink yarn aside for some time (or at least until you finally give in and hand me the other pink top). I think the sideline top would work better for you, but find a different colour yarn.
Happy knitting and remember when you knit for friends, you are happier…

Frankly, I don’t think the February Lady Sweater looks good on any actual ladies. Maybe with mods–I like the lacy body. If you could mod it for your shape, I might try to copy you.

The Sidelines would be much more flattering.

As to whether you should do it in another color, I have no opinion. :)

I say Sidelines, but I personally want to make that one. I agree with jamy, I don’t think the February Lady Sweater looks good on many people. Not sure if it should be done with that yarn or not though.

I like the shaping of the Sidelines better. Because the February Lady is modified from a baby pattern (which I’ve done and like) it’s a bit shapeless. Probably works fine for women with no shape to them, but I don’t know that it’s terribly flattering for most women.

I liked both but I doubt I will use the sweater but I am sure I will use the top often.

  • AS says:

I am unable to help because my preference for cardigans is starting to turn into an aversion to pullovers, and thus I am biased.

(But, really, they’d probably both be fine.)

Well, I vote for the Lady Sweater – I think it would be more versatile than the Sidelines top (which I also like). And I think pink looks good on you!

I vote for the Lady Sweater. It looks pretty good to me on most people. I think the worsted weight might be a bit heavy for Sidelines. A pink cardi will perk up the winter blahs.

  • Deepa says:

I know the Lady Sweater is popular, but I honestly don’t like it all that much…best on a baby, if you ask me. The Sidelines looks to be much better for a real “lady” figure. I love the color!

Brooks Farm Mas Acero…..the gods have visited upon you one of the perfect knitting yarns. No, I am not associated with them, other than owning tons of their yarn. My first FLS was made of Mas Acero. It came out gloriously, thanks to the yarn’s willingness to block “long” and to make an indented waist of sorts. It IS a smaller gauge than the pattern calls for, so you may need th rethink your sizing. I wear a size 12 and made a large.

BTW if you want to sell that yarn, you know who to call!

Good luck with your all lovely choices.

Whatever you knit with that yarn will look fab!!

  • manDuka says:

If you ask me (whatdoiknowaboutknitting etc) the Sidelines top is just meh. ALL that work for that? Your Ogee tunic is waaaay more interesting.

my vote is for the FLS. i think it is so popular cos it looks good on all types of frames.
