I should have gone with the pajamas
What Fifteen Hours of Sewing 101 Taught Me:
1. Patience is far more critical to sewing than knitting, even though sewing produces results faster.
2. A garment is wearable and comfortable despite the crooked seams.
3. If interested in a good fit, it is always helpful to look beyond chest measurements, to things like ease, length, etc.
4. Do not rely on the sewing store experts or the teacher to pick the right size for you, even if you tell them you are absolutely new to published patterns.
5. Still, it is possible to be imaginative and view sleeves large enough to accommodate the family as a fashion detail.
6. Reading, cutting, ironing and pinning wafer-thin paper patterns is extremely fiddly, but when you painstakingly finish the fifteen hundred complicated steps, and the bands fall nicely into place, it’s really a very good feeling.
7. Pinning is absolutely KEY. It’s the gauge of sewing, that without which you are doomed.
8. Topstitch is a bitch. But the ninth time you try it after ripping it eight times and being close to tears, you can learn to live with it.
9. Motorised sewing machines are not at all scary. In fact the Jenome Heart is quite handy.
10. This is addictive, and browsing for second-hand machines on Ebay and Craigslist is bewildering but fun. What’s stressful is figuring out how to find the time to indulge this new craze in your busiest semester ever.

I do poorly in most of those categories you listed but I still l like sewing. I picked it up while finishing up (okay procrastinating) writing my masters thesis. I’m starting to think there is never a convenient time. That’s a lovely robe, well done! Can’t wait to see what you do next. Good luck at the start of the fall semester.
That came out great! I don’t think the sleeves are too big – it’s a robe, in the kimono style
Well done!!
It’s a lovely kimono! Congratulations on a job well done! Yeah, it kind of sucks that school starts tomorrow. I need at least two more weeks of mental health days, er, knitting days to gear up to face those students.
how to make salwar kameez
love the sleeves
. how you manage to teach, grade, knit, research, (write too, i assume) AND sew (and all the other things you do) is beyond me…. if at any time you do a time- and self-management post, you’ll have at least one eager reader!
You made that! Amazing. I finally bought a sewing machine, and the pressure foot does not work. By the time I get that exchanged, get the new foot, figure out the machine…well.. a zillion years.
Woweee..it turned out really cool… Love the fabric more now and love the kimono style…
Dying to see what you are going to a start next..
Love, love, love the way this turned out! You’ve become quite the sewing maverick and your stitching is perfect!
cant wait to see more sewing projects!
Desi Knitter:
I have a question. I was using my Jenone Heart the other day and, in a freak accident involving a striped cat, some Hershey bars, and a ceiling fan, I mistakenly sewed my hand to the table. I wouldn’t mind but it is difficult carrying the table with me everywhere I go. People are starting to stare.
Any suggestions?
