I seem to be having a mental block -- how does one cast on 20 stitches and later have 20 plus 20 stitches?? I understanding casting on 20 and knitting and knitting to form a ridge (garter stitch). Let me tell you my design idea--I have a crown from a failed hat and I want to knit the sideways band and attach to my old crown with a decorative ridge or some such thing. I think it will work and I will be able to use my old crown. What do you think? Thanks. sapodedo

I *love* this hat. I made two for Christmas, have a request for another, and just e-mailed the link for the pattern to a friend. For my hats, I used a three-needle bind off to join the band, because I don't know how to graft. One hat was for a 40-something husband of a friend, the other for a teenager. The teenager's was made in his school colors. Both were a hit, and fit well. Thanks for the pattern! I will be making a few more of these.

Next Q! For the crown, do I alternate between the two colors after every two rows? It appears that way when I peer closely at the pic. But it would be great if you could confirm! Thanks!

What color should I do the grafting with? MC or CC? If it is MC, I don't have a long enough tail. :-( Poo! That's cos I followed instructions from a website that said a long tail was not required. If it is CC, then Needle #1 needs to be in front cos otherwise the CC yarn is at the bottom. Or do I just attach yarn and start grafting? Sorry if this is a stupid question but I need help at this point!

This is very cool. I'll try it soon for a charity knit, but may not be soon enough to give helpful feedback. Thanks for the pattern - looks brilliant.
